News and Notes 10-23-17

Religion Awards-Work on award requirements, if planning to receive award.

Living Rosary will be held on Friday morning. Parents are welcome to attend. Please bring a non-perishable food item for the food bank.

Picture Retakes on Wednesday.

Science-This week we will be using regular Oreo cookies to demonstrate moon phases. Please let me know if there is any reason your child cannot eat these.

Spelling List: slip, sled, slam, snap, snack, smog, skit, skill, swim.

Challenge Words: story, storyteller, smudge, strong, smooth. Test on Friday.

Math Test-Students will have chapter 2 test on Wednesday.

Homework Time Limit-Homework should not take more than 30 minutes.

If homework is taking longer, stop at 30 minutes, and let me know. I do not want any students or parents stressed.

October 4, 2017

First Friday Mass and Blessing of the Animals on Friday. Mass begins at 9:00 followed by the blessing.

Reading and Spelling Assignments are being given for this week and next.

Test will be given for spelling words next Thursday. New books are coming

home today, but students will get more practice with them in class. I am still tweaking levels for your children.

Spelling List: on, off, stop, long, not, dog, got, hot, job, lot.

Challenge Words: common, comma, consonant, glossary, topic.

Conferences are next week. Early dismissal next Thursday, 10/12. School will be closed 10/13.

Cooperation Cubes have been reduced to 4. Students have 4 chances per day to earn a sticker on their chart.

Test Folders-Tests were sent home last week. Please sign and return tests in the folder. Parents may look up grades on My Student’s Progress.

Dress Down Day on Friday-Cost is $1.00. Donations are being sent to a Catholic school in Texas. Walmart/Target gift cards may also be donated. Students will be told the theme before Friday.

Save Around Books-will come home today.

Scholastic Book Orders-Please order online or sent to school by Friday. Make checks payable to Scholastic.

All About Me-Show and Share items should be brought in by Friday. Please send nonbreakable and not treasured items.

Spelling Words: let, get, ten, help, went, fell, tell, men, wet, bed.

Challenge Words: blend, context, describe, text, retell.

Students only need to practice and study the 10 regular words. I will let you know if your child will be assigned the challenge words.

Reading-Please record the readings your child does in the reading log. This helps me gauge the correct reading level.

Math-We will be finishing the first chapter at the end of the week, or by early next week. The first test will be given next Wednesday.

Religion-Students will have their first test tomorrow. I will send home the book to review on Monday.

Mix Up-I apologize for giving the wrong date for First Friday Mass.

Picture Day on Wednesday. Wear school uniform.

Special Classes-Music is also taught to first grade on Thursday and is followed by gym.

Parents As Partners Meeting will be held on Wednesday evening.

English Language Arts Homework (ELA for short.)-Words are listed below.

Spelling assignments will be listed on a Tic-Tac-Toe menu. This will come home on Tuesday. Please return copybook and Tic-Tac-Toe sheet on Friday.

All students will be tested on the first 10 words. Challenge words will be assigned individually. At this point only 1 student has been assigned these words.

Spelling List: had, has, as, at, and, man, ran, tan, bag, ask.

Challenge Words: action, caption, addition, draft, fact.

Reading assignments will be coming home in a Reading folder on Tuesdays. Please return Reading folder on Friday. Read each assignment nightly. I am still determining your child’s individual level, so this week’s fit may be little too easy, or a little too challenging. Please let me know on the reading log if the assignments given are a poor fit.
