News and Notes 1-15-18

Spelling Words: blue, glue, true, cute, cube, clue, huge, use, flute, mule.

Challenge Words: future, excuse, include, conclude, conclusion. Test on Friday.

Reading Folders-Because of the generous Christmas gift cards, I am replacing reading folders. Folders will contain the weekly spelling words, Dolch sight words, phrases, and sentences, as well as the regular reading log.

The colors differ, so look for anew plastic folder labeled Reading.

Test Folders will come home by Wednesday.

Old classwork is being returned today. Please look through and keep home, unless marked fix or finish.

Math Project-I am assigning an at home Math Project. Project directions and rubric (grading guide) will come home by Wednesday. Your child will have several weeks to complete the project.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Thank you for the generosity shown this Christmas. I am very grateful.

Christmas Activity-We will be dipping pretzel rods on Friday afternoon. Thank you in advance for the requested donations. Students may exchange Christmas cards this afternoon as well.

Prayer Service will be held at 2:30 on Friday. Parents are welcome to attend.

Math Test-We are coming close to the end of Chapter 4. The test will be given after the holidays, but not the first day back.

Report Card Envelopes-Please return signed envelopes. Keep the report card at home. Thank you.

News and Notes 12-11-17

Class Trip to Bethlehem Catholic High School will be this Wednesday. We leave on the bus promptly at 8:30. Please be on time. Bring a new, unwrapped toy. Wear regular uniform. Eat a good breakfast. Snack is provided, but it is small. We will arrive back at school around 12:50-1:00.

Students will still get their Hot Lunch.

Gospel Alive-First grade presents the Gospel on Friday. Readers have been given their parts. Other students will be acting out the parts of Priests, Levites, John the Baptist, and people to be baptized. Those acting out parts are asked to wear a parent’s shirt. We will make head pieces in class.

Spelling Words: name, base, same, take, ate, late, date, game, made, make.

Challenge Words: phrase, narrate, folktale, grateful, graceful. Test on Friday.

Test Folders-Please return empty folders for the new trimester.

Dress Down Day Passes-Students should wear regular uniforms for days we attend Mass. Please do not dress down on First Fridays or Holy Days. Thank you.

Challenge Words: whom, whose, white, research, change. Test on Friday.

Spelling Words are becoming more challenging. We will be doing additional practice in class.

Leveled Books-Please return the paper copies of leveled books that are sent home. These are used with other groups at different times, and I am trying to conserve paper. If you would like to keep the book longer for practice, please let me know.

Class Trip to Bethlehem Catholic First Grade Christmas Party will be next Wednesday, December 13. Students will be picked up at school by the Becahi bus around 8:30 and will return to school in time for Hot Lunch. Students are asked to bring a new toy (unwrapped) to donate to Toys for Tots. Permission slips will come home this week.

Santa’s Secret Shop-First grade will shop Thursday morning. Students will feel left out if they cannot shop.

Feast of the Immaculate Conception-Mass will be held on Friday at 9:00. Parents are welcome to attend.

Reading-This week I’m having students reread the same books as last week. Students will also be reading either stories in the reading textbook, Reading Street,

or a regular soft cover book (trade book).

have a test on facts of ten and doubles facts from 1+1 up to 10+10 early next week. You may want to make flash cards. Below are the facts that students need to know:

Food Bank-Thank you for all the donations. We have 622 items so far. Tomorrow morning is the last day for donations. Thanks so much!

Found-There are three girls’ sweaters in our coatroom. Please let me know if your child is missing one.

Reading-This week we are finishing instruction and comprehension checks for previous books. I am sending home a read to/read with assignment for your child. I am not sending fluency, sight words, or extra comprehension

pages. There will not be a leveled book this week.

Snack-Students who are receiving Hot Lunch would probably still like to have a snack.

Early Dismissal on Wednesday-No busing from Quakertown Community School District. Please send a note or email if your child is going home with someone besides a parent.

HOMEWORK

Monday-Last day for food bank donations. Send transportation note/email.

Feast on Wednesday-Students will be served a full Thanksgiving turkey dinner. Green beans can be sent in for first grade’s contribution.

Dress Down Day on Friday. Bring in a can of food for the food bank. Wear your favorite color.

Golden Can Challenge-An anonymous family has offered to match food items up to 300 for any donated by first grade. Thank you for your generous donations.
