News and Notes 11-12-18

Challenge Words: long, very, over. Dictation test on Friday.

Math Facts-Please practice double facts with your child 6+6-12 through 10+10=20. Test on Friday. Use the “Doubles, Doubles” video on YouTube, and the web site Math Fact Cafe, grade 2 under doubles.

Thanksgiving Feast-Feast will be held on Tuesday, November 13 at 12:00. Bring a lunch, if not eating Thanksgiving dinner. Thank you for the donations and generous help for this event.

Dress Down Day-Comfy clothes (no pajamas) on Friday. The cost is $1.00.

Food Bank-Food for the food pantry is currently being collected. We have had some donations so far, Thank you for your donations.

Math Facts-Students need to memorize their double facts: 1+1=2 through 10+10=20. There are YouTube videos to help with this skill. We have been using

“Doubles, Doubles.” You may also help your child by using the web site Math Fact Cafe. Go to second grade, then doubles. I will be testing double facts sums to 10 on Friday, and double fact sums11-20 next week.

Fall Fest-Congratulations on the great turnout and enthusiasm for the event. Kudos to all the parents, students, and volunteers. It was amazing!

Spirit Day is Friday afternoon. Wear Spirit Wear or gym clothes.

Eeturn Religion Award Folder and Book It calendar.

Halloween Party-Party will be Wednesday after lunch. Please bring your costume in a bag. No weapons or hair color. Wear gym uniform. Thank you, families for the donated items.

Safe Environment-Students will have the first Protecting God’s Children lesson today.

Mass for All Saints will be November 1 at 9:00. First Friday Mass will be November 2 at 9:00. Parents are welcome to join us.

Show and Share-We will begin a Show and Share project this week. Please help your child choose an item to write about, tell about, and bring. This will be a graded assignment. Schedule will come home early this week.

Math Facts Test on facts to 6, and adding with 0 and 1 will be on Friday.

Living Rosary will be held at 9:00 on Friday, October 26. Parent are welcome to pray with us.

Math-Chapter 2 test will be on Thursday. Homework this week will help to review for the test. Students will also be tested next week on addition facts with sums to 6, as well as adding 0 and 1 to a number.

St. Isidore Auction-First grade will be sponsoring a Lego themed basket for the Auction in March. I am beginning to collect any contributions related to the Lego theme. Past contributions have included tickets to the Lego Experience, specifically themed boxed sets, Lego storage, Lego blankets, and Lego Friends. Any and all contributions are welcome.

Fall Conferences are this week on Thursday afternoon and Friday. Early dismissal

at 12:00 on Thursday. School is closed on Friday.

Halloween Party-I will be asking for donations during conferences. Thank you in advance for your help.

Spelling List: up, us, but, run, fun, jump, upon, sum, bus, slug.

Challenge Words: out, have, little. We will have this unit for two weeks.

Test will be next Friday. Students have 2 weeks to complete Tic-Tac-Toe menu.

Fire Fighters will visit first grade on Thursday, from 10:45-11:15.

DIBELS Math Testing-Students took an online Math test this past week using the i Pads. This testing took quite a while, so we will be finishing the book students read last week. I am sending home single page readings this week, instead of a new book.

Scholastic Book Orders are due online or sent into school by October 11.

Family Tree Project-In Religion and Social Studies we are learning about the Holy Family, and our own families.  Please help your child make a family tree by writing family names on leaves.  Include any family members you wish to include.  There is no strict set-up.

First Friday Mass and Blessing of the Animals on Friday. Mass is at 9:00, followed by Blessing of the Animals on the school porch. No animals may be at Mass, come in by bus, or stay all day.

Dry Erase Markers-When you have time/money in the next month please send in 4

dry erase markers. I recommend Expo or Staples brand. Please avoid red ones, as they are hard to erase. Thank you.

Test Folders will come home by Thursday. Please keep all tests in the folder, sign, and return when signed.

Lunch-Please send a dishtowel for lunchtime. Please remember to send in a daily snack, especially now that Hot Lunch is starting.

Math Book-Keep chapter 1 book at home. I recommend keeping the book until the end of the school year.

Snack-Please remember to send a daily snack and dishtowel for lunch time, even if your child is getting Hot Lunch.

Please return Lion’s Vision Screening paper (new students only) and Catapult Counselor Visit permission slip. Mrs. Langen will visit grade 1 on Thursday afternoon for about 20-25 minutes.

Math Resource book may be left book at home for reference.

Blue Reading Folders/blue duck copybooks/and Spelling Tic-Tac-Toe should stay home until Friday. There is no need to send them in daily.

Reading-Student reading groups are still being adjusted. Thank you for the feedback about the ease or difficulty of the reading selections. You are your child’s first, and most important teacher. I value your input.

Picture Day is on Wednesday. Gym is also on Wednesday. All students should wear sneakers and white PE socks. Boys: wear PE shorts and maroon golf shirt. Bring T-shirt for PE. Girls: wear regular uniform (jumper and pink blouse) with PE shorts underneath. Bring T-shirt for PE. Girls who wear uniform shorts, may wear PE shorts with the pink blouse. Bring T-shirt to change into.

Challenge Words-the, of, to. Dictation test on Friday. See note below.

Spelling and Reading assignments will come home on Tuesday, and are due back on Friday. There will be a spelling dictation test on Friday. All students are responsible for all 13 words. The challenge words are high-frequency sight words. Credit will be given for correct challenge words, but there will be no penalty for misspelled words. Spelling homework will be a Tic-Tac-Toe menu where your child chooses 3 activities weekly. Complete written Spelling work in blue duck copybook. Reading will be found in the blue reading folder that will be sent home on Tuesdays. Students are still being assessed for reading levels.

Religion Awards-Students may work toward a Religion Award. I will send home folders containing an explanation and activity choices. The folder should be completed and returned each month October-March in order to earn the Religion Award Medal.

Book Club Orders will come home by Wednesday. Orders are due by Sept. 21. Order online, or make checks payable to Scholastic.

Religion-Parents, please help our child write an easy kid-friendly joke or riddle on the paper provided. We are sending jokes to Cameron Wakeley who is undergoing treatment.
